One of the most common questions we get asked is how to get started in the HVAC industry. While everyone’s path is different, there are three common ways to start:
- Get hired by a company who has an apprenticeship program or who likes to train their technicians from the ground up. The advantage to the company is that they don’t have to break bad habits, they only have to teach their way of doing things. The advantage to you is that you get free on the job training.
- Go through a 1-2 year vocational school program before being hired by a company. The advantage to the company is they get someone with a working knowledge of HVAC. The advantage to you is that you might be able to start at a higher wage than someone new to the industry.
- Take several starter classes from a school like HBTI to get a basic knowledge of HVAC and then get hired by a company who likes to train from the ground up. The advantage to the company is that they know you have received excellent training and know the basics. The advantage to you is you are ahead of the curve when you’re being trained.
